Do you need a page - or even a site?
Well, no-one actually needs a page - or a number of pages, a 'site' - any more than anyone actually needs a car with a sunroof as opposed to one without.
However, the Web is a potent medium, combining as it does text, graphics, sound, video
and a certain amount of interactivity. There is no doubt that, when the security issue over the
transfer of funds is solved (probably a lot faster than anyone imagines), it will become primarily
a commercial medium.
As a business, you will probably want to have a Web presence, if not now, then in the
future. It is a medium of communication. You currently use the mail, possibly print media, the
telephone and the fax to communicate with your audience. The Web will expand that list.
In the short term, it will demonstrate to your customer base that
you are aware, up-to-date and progressive. You will attract like-minded people, who will inevitably eMail you and make contact - but only if your page is sufficiently attractive and appealing.
As both soft- and hardware continues to evolve, there exists the very real potential for
the Web to facilitate the provision of goods and services without buyer and seller coming face-
to-face. Think of the Web as a 3D catalog
with sound and video.
However, if you think that a Web presence will immediately generate a substantial flow
of revenue - don't hold your breath!
Enter the Web with the idea that you are establishing
a presence which will generate business and revenue over the long-term.
There's a Zen to the
Web. Go into it with the right attitude - that it enhances your identity - and beneficial effects
will eventually flow to you.
