The A-Z of Website Design...

A

Aims. Be clear about what you hope to achieve with your site. A general feeling that you should be on the Web is not a good enough reason to build a site.

B

Brevity. Your Web communication should be brief and to the point. Slabs of text MAY be read in a brochure, but will NOT be read on a screen.

C

Clarity of purpose is essential to a good Website.

D

Download time is the enemy! Take all possible steps to minimize it.

E

Efficiency. Be concise - one mouse click equals one idea.

F

Fast. In this medium, speed is of the essence...fast download, fast comprehension.

G

Graphics on a page increase download time dramatically, so use them sparingly.

H

HTML - it's a lot easier to learn than anyone lets on...

I

Images take time to download, so use them with discretion. Ask yourself in what way they enhance your site. If you can't think of three very good reasons to use images, leave them out.

J

Judgment. Think of how your page will be viewed and the judgments that will be made about you and your operation.

K

KISS - "Keep It Simple, Stupid!" should be on the wall of all who fancy themselves as page designers.

L

Less is always more.

M

Maintenance is critical to a successful Website. Your site should be updated on a regular basis - at least monthly - to encourage repeat visits.
